A special thanks to Constance,
who is a member of the group and who created this beautiful tag for our
group to use. Thanks so much, Constance, for a job well done
!
Welcome to Applets and
Accessories for OE !
We are so glad to have you here
with us. For those of you who have just joined our group
and don't know quite where to
begin....and just so everyone is on the same
page....
Here are some suggestions
that may prove helpful for you as you begin to create your first
applet.
First of all, and foremost, you
will need to set up a web account unless, of course, you already have
one, which is great! There are several free sites you can choose
from for your webhost.
Bravenet , has
always been my choice for a free site in the past. But, Bravenet
no longer allows class files as well as some other files (asf
files for example) on their free sites. Since you cannot make an
applet work without the class files, this site just won't do.
So, unless you are planning to
buy a site there, I would not recommend that webhost to you.
If you are planning to get a paid site, the paid sites are very
reasonable at Bravenet and with the paid sites you are allowed any type
of file. My site has been there for years, there are a lot of
resource materials available to you there in case you are
interested.
You can also use a
Bravenet's related company called 0catch or
freewebsitehosting for your free site. These sites give you 100mb of
space and will allow the needed class files and asf files, but will not
allow you to store zip files, .exe files or mp3 files on the
site.
Angelfire ,
and Tripod are
also well known webhosting sites. They offer only a small
amount of web space, but it would be a sufficient amount to
learn on.
The main disadvantage to these
sites is that you will have scripted ads on the top of all of your
html pages and not alot of storage space. You can always
upgrade to a paid site to remove the ads if you like at these sites
at a later time. We can help you with most
sites since they are very similar, and we will be glad to help you in
any way we can.
You will need to set up a
homepage or index.html once you get your account set up. A
simple page with a background and some links will be sufficient.
You can find a script for this at our script folder
located in the files section at Yahoo
Groups.
You may just want to keep an
inventory page. That would be fine too. As long as there is
an index page, you can not be accused of storage. However, you
must remember, that if you use an inventory page with links to your
items, you make them available to everyone on the web for sharing
purposes.
If you need someone to help
you to do this step by step, either Shari or Karen or one of our
moderators will be glad to help you. You can reach
Shari ,
Norma Jean or
Karen by e-mail or
contact the group. Send an open letter, and someone
will get back to you. Please be sure to mark your messages as
high priority so that we will be sure to see them right
away.
While at the files section at
Yahoo Groups, be sure to check out our collection of class files, script
files, eots, sound files, etc. for download and for you to use
freely. Also, be sure to check out the graphics in the photos
section.
You are not required to use
those photos, of course, they are only there for your convenience.
You may have files of your own already that you want to use, and that is
great wonderful. Choose something you like, and would want to
display proudly! Those files are only there to help get you
started.
Once you are set up and have
chosen the files that you want to use, you are ready to
begin. There are sniplets text documents (small sections of
java script, essential to the applet) enclosed with the class
files at Yahoo.
You can browse through the
tutorials on the group site to help decide which applet you would like
to make. I recommend that you start with the lake applet, since it
is one of the easier applets to do.
I also have made some step
by step tutorials for those I am most familiar with. You will be
able to access the tutorial at our website @ AAAwebsitesetup.html.
First, you will need to decide if
you are making a
stationery or a webpage
with your applet. The main difference is in what pathway you would
use.
And, again, just so we are
all on the same page.......
You
will need to put these files in your folders on your site.
Let's
talk about where your files will go in your
website and the pathways you will use for your
scripting.....please remember that it will be essential to be
precise....websites are usually case sensitive......and also, we
must remember to use quotation marks around the pathways.
For
example, when you are making a stationery:
*in the iframe code for your applet you would
also use
* for asf, wav or even
midi files, you would use this pathway:
* for web eot files, you
would use this pathway:
Note - You may use a shortened
form when using the codebase, which would be just the
folder name/image.jpg.
However, I like for you to get
used to using
the whole address at first, then
we take shortcuts!
When
making a stationery, other files, including your background files, midi,
wav, eots and your html files would be kept wherever you keep your
stationery files on your computer and use those pathways. For
example ......
src="C:/Program
Files/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/Stationery/your
file.jpg"
(or whatever
extension for the file you are using, for example Windows7 people use a
different method = C:/ Stationery)
Now on
a webpage, the pathways can be a little
different.......
* your class files go
into the main webshell
(no codebase is required in your applet code -
just code="whatever.class")
* your html file for
your webpage will also
go into the main
webshell
("name of the
file.html")
* your applet images will go
in your
applets folder on your
website
("applets/image.jpg")
* your music....ie midi, wav or
asf will go to your music folder)
("music/midi.mid")
NOW,
you are ready to go! I have some tutorials at the group site to
help you make your first applet creation. You can access them
at the link below........
I hope this helps you get
underway ......
can't wait to see what you come
up with......
